ITEM TITLE:

Title

Discuss the possibility of adopting an ordinance requiring microchipping of all dogs and cats in the City of Lawton.

body

INITIATOR:  James T. Smith, Chief of Police

STAFF INFORMATION SOURCE:  Roy Rodrick, Animal Welfare Superintendent

BACKGROUND: Animal Welfare Officers frequently come into contact with stray animals that have no identification. These animals end up in the care of the Lawton Animal Welfare with no means to locate the owner. A study with the American Veterinary Medical Association shows that a higher percentage of lost animals that are microchipped are returned to the owner. This proposed change of requiring microchipping will allow these animals to be returned to their owner in a timelier manner.
