INITIATOR:  Michael Watrous, Public Works Director

STAFF INFORMATION SOURCE:  Michael Watrous, Public Works Director

BACKGROUND: In order to preserve public safety and health, an event to pick up abandoned shopping carts has been proposed for the month of November. Shopping carts will be picked up at no cost to residents on normal bulk waste pick up weeks, except for Thanksgiving week when cart pickup may extend into the first week of December. Commercial businesses will be allowed to pick up carts at no cost at the Public Works office at 2202 SW 3rd Street during normal business hours through December and January.

EXHIBIT:  Resolution #  __, program presentation

KEY ISSUES:  Poly-Cart replacement personnel will be used to pick-up carts. Poly-cart replacement will still be their priority, with shopping carts being their secondary goal during the month of November.

Public Works Staff spoke with several larger commercial businesses and cart reclamation was cost prohibitive for them. Due to this, no fees to reclaim carts are recommended. This will allow businesses to reclaim at their expense of manual labor and transportation, allowing for maximum participation and building better relationships with businesses across the city.
