BACKGROUND: A building permit has been submitted by Ryan Herring Construction Inc and Design Architects Plus for a proposed tornado shelter/gymnasium at Ridgecrest Elementary School, located at 1614 NW 47th Street. The tornado shelter/gymnasium is proposed to be located west of the school between the school and the bus drop-off lane and complies with the required setbacks per the City of Lawton Code. The design has a freestanding canopy to be situated on the west side of the new shelter next to the bus drop-off lane. This canopy is located within the required setback. President of Design Architects Plus, Kahle Wilson, has submitting a request for a waiver to the setback code requirement. The letter of request is an exhibit.
18-5-7-574 - Side and rear yards. “Except as provided in Section 18-404.1 of this code, where property in a P-F District abuts property in any other district, the minimum yard required shall be the same as that required along the same property line in the abutting district unless otherwise amended in accordance with Section 18-5-7-577.”
