STAFF INFORMATION SOURCE: Cynthia Williams, Internal Auditor and Grants Coordinator
BACKGROUND: On June 14, 2023 a substantial storm with strong straight-line winds, wind-blown debris and large hail hit the City of Lawton. The storm damaged 328 vehicles totaling $2,202,175.04. Lawton has spent $97,335.99 to repair broken glass, windshields and mirrors. The remaining $2,104,839.05 claim is for body dents. Because the damaged vehicles do not have insurance coverage for hail damage, the cost of repairing the hail damage is close to or exceeds the value of some of the vehicles, and the minor hail damage does not affect the vehicle’s performance or structural integrity, it is requested to invest the repair money into another capital purchase rather than repair the cosmetic damages. FEMA will allow 75% of the claimed expenses ($1,651,631.28) to be deferred to an alternative procedures project. Staff has identified the purchase of a mobile command unit ($1,466,882.38), animal rescue trailer ($62,000.00), and a landfill crawler dozer (631,374.00) totaling $2,160,256.38 as a qualifying alternative project.
