INITIATOR:  Charlotte Brown, Community Service Director & Jared Williams, Fire Chief

STAFF INFORMATION SOURCE:  Heath Want, Fire Marshal

BACKGROUND: The Oklahoma Uniform Building Code Commission (OUBCC was created in 2009 to create a uniform code across the state of Oklahoma. The OUBCC reviews the fire codes as well as the buildings codes, makes amendments and adopts them at a state level. It is then up to the municipalities to adopt at their levels the codes to enforce. The state adopted the 2018 ICC Commercial codes in 2021.

Staff met with the Process and Oversight Committee on August 19, 2024, and was recommended to bring forth the ordinance to move forward with adopting the 2018 versions of International Fire Code as well as the other International Codes.

The state is moving forward with the adoption of the 2024 versions of the codes as well, but staff has not started the review of those codes at this time.

The effective date of this ordinance will be November 1, 2024, which will allow staff time to notify all of the current contractors that this change is coming and to prepare for the updated that will be required.
