BACKGROUND: Council identified a need to relocate a population of prairie dogs currently residing on municipal parkland within the city of Lawton.  The presence of the prairie dog colony has raised concerns due to overpopulation, public safety, environmental concerns, potential conflicts with planned development, and citizen concerns.  As prairie dogs are a keystone species, their relocation requires careful planning to ensure their safety and to minimize ecological disruption. The purpose of this agenda item is to present City Council with an overview of the prairie dog program, including methods used, timelines, and selected relocation sites.
