BACKGROUND: A request for a variance for the installation of a sink and an exterior stair for a boathouse located at Schoolhouse Slough #34 has been received by the Building Division. This boathouse is a brand new construction that has just recently been completed. Upon the inspection for a building final, it was discovered that the contractor had installed a sink and an exterior stair that was not shown on the original approved plans.
Section 19-5-508 of Lawton City Code states that "No dock shall be wider than 30 feet, including all docks." With the installation of the stairway, the boathouse will be 32.5 feet wide.
Section 19-5-508 of Lawton City Code also stats that "No dock unit shall have any sink or bathing facility." A sink with an electric spray hose and a container for the drain was installed.
Both items were installed without prior review and approval. The Building Development Appeals Board heard the variance on July 15th and recommend approval of the variance to City Council by a vote of 4-1.
There was some request from the Board that Parks and Recreation do some review of the code for example, defining a sink, since the sink doesn't have pressurized water and is not connected to a sewer system, the Board didn't feel like this "basin" was a sink.
